Introduction to the RUS service –Research and User Support for Sentinel Core Products 

 

A  new  fleet  of  satellites  developed  by  ESA  for  the  European  Commission,  the  Sentinels,  has  begun systematic acquisition of Earth Observation data all over the globe in 2014. The acquisition will continue for the next decades with follow-on missions. The RUS (Research and User Support for the Sentinel Core Products) service has been set up to foster Sentinel exploitation by providing users with scalable cloud processing environment with specialised user helpdesk and tailored training.

This training course aims to introduce the Copernicus Sentinel data and their wide variety of applications to potential new users as well as to introduce the RUS service to existing Sentinel users. For this purpose the attendees will be provided with access to the RUS platform virtual machine and step by step instructions on downloading, visualising and processing optical (Sentinel-2) and SAR (Sentinel-1) data.

Session 1

Date: 05 July 2017 a.m. 10.30 – 13.00 ROOM OB BUILDING H3

Duration: 2.5 hours 

 In   the   first   session   we   will   use   examples   of   applications   from   the   oceanography   domain: ocean colour (S-2 data or S-3 data) and ship detection (S-1 data).

The training session will be organised into three parts:

  1. General introduction (30 mins) – Information on RUS and Copernicus
  2. Optical data (60 mins) – hands-on training session, Sentinel-2, -3, data acquisition, pre-processing and ocean colour monitoring

SAR data (60 mins) – hands-on training session, ship detection in the Gulf of Trieste using Sentinel-1 (SAR pre-processing + target detection)

Session 2

Date: 05 July 2017 p.m. 14.30 – 17.00 ROOM OB BUILDING H3 

Duration: 2.5 hours

In the second session we will use examples of applications for disaster mapping. The training session will be organised in two parts:

  1. General introduction (30 mins) – Information on RUS and Copernicus
  2. Hands-on training session (120 mins) – Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data for disaster mapping

The event is free cost for ICCSA 2017 participants, who will be requested to use their laptops connected to a cloud processing environment.

The maximum number of participants is 20-30 (which need to be pre-registered as virtual machines have to be configured for them).

This course introduces several open source technologies to manage geographic information in a very flexible and powerful way.

To unleash the power of maps and geographic data handling we need to take advantage of several different tools. Instead of being constrained to the functionality of just one particular solution or provider, in the open source world we chain several different components to get the best of each one.

All exercises will be developed on top of the OSGeo Live distribution. OSGeo Live is entirely based on open source software allowing it to be freely distributed, duplicated and passed around. All data used in the exercises is from China.

It is an intensive hands on course, covering many topics. All attendees are requested to do the exercises during the course using their own laptops. All course materials are online.

The Aim of the tutorial is to describe critical phases of decision making process, by identifying soft and hard approaches and methods coming by Collaborative Decision-Making Processes for the valorization of Cultural Heritage and environmental resources, in order to define the filed

Outline

The tutorial is organized into several parts. The first part briefly introduces the concept of decision making problem, from the Arrow theorems to the concept of sustainable decision making for urban and spatial management. The second part shows in theory and practice s the use of Decision Support Systems and Spatial Decision Support Systems, starting from well-known Multicriteria Assessment Methods. The last part illustrates  applications of social and participative processes and spatial Multicriteria Decision Making for the strengthening of conservation and valorization of environment, landscape and cultural heritage, theoretical lections and discussion on case studies.

Prerequisites

This tutorial is opened to scholars already familiarized with Urban Economics and Planning, Geography and Spatial Sciences, Plan and Project Appraisal, who want to learn the new capabilities and get familiar with optimizations to be socio-political-technical decision-making processes. The arena is the Urban/environmental Management and the Heritage management.
